Pew Donation Will Lead To Desks For Needy Students

Students helping students, that's the message behind a special program taking place at Roosevelt High School.  Thanks to a donation of a truckload of church pews, Roosevelt High School students in teacher Bart Adastra's shop class will build desks with bookshelves for younger students in the District who do not have desks at home.
The pews were donated to Roosevelt by the Temple Israel in Creve Coeur, thanks to the assistance of Karen Kalish of the Home Works program.  Ms. Kalish arranged for the donation of the pews through her association with the Jewish Light newspaper.  Kalish is an acitive volunteer in the District who always seeks to improve the life of the children in SLPS.
Starting in the fall, Roosevelt students will work in teams to build desks with bookshelves out of the pews.  Mr. Adastra estimates his students will be able to create about 30 desks with bookshelves out of the donated pews.  The finished products will then be donated to Home Works families in the District who do not have a desk or bookshelf in their home.
