• Gateway STEM High School Hosts 2nd Annual 5K for Autism Program

    Autism Walk   Johnson and Dotson

Gateway STEM High School was the proud host of the 2nd annual Embrace the Puzzle 5K Run/Walk fundraiser on October 4, 2013. Donations support the school’s Autism Program.

Special guests included McKinley alum and former professional football player Demetrious Johnson, Metro alum St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department Chief Sam Dotson, and the new-this-year Missouri Baptist University football team and coaches.

Johnson, the run/walk's honorary chairperson, has been a special friend to St. Louis Public Schools. Students in the Autism Program volunteer at The Demetrius Johnson Charitable Foundation, which provides them with the opportunity to develop necessary life and job skills.

“The Autism Program is really one of the best in the nation,” Dr. Elizabeth Bender, principal of Gateway STEM, told visitors and students prior to the walk. “You guys know from just being at Gateway, that we are a school on the rise—fully accredited, one of the top magnet schools. We are doing it! And we not only are doing it upstairs, but down in the autism wing where … amazing things are happening, so it’s wonderful on days like this that we can all partner together.”
