ST. LOUIS, Mo. (May 15, 2014) – Eighteen St. Louis Public Schools were recently awarded nearly $72,000 to help fund student health and wellness activities.

The funds were made available through Fuel Up to Play 60, an in-school nutrition and physical activity program created in partnership with Midwest Dairy Council, the St. Louis Rams and National Football League that encourages students to eat healthy, be active and implement positive changes at school.

"We are so grateful for the Fuel Up to Play 60 funding that was provided to our 18 schools," shared Leanne White, project director for AIM for Fitness, St. Louis Public School District. "This funding will greatly support our efforts to expand current health and wellness programming and add new initiatives – including maximizing physical activity opportunities for students during recess and improving core strength with the replacement of the classroom desk chairs with a stability balls.”

Schools that received the Fuel Up to Play 60 funding include: Adams Elementary, Bryan Hill Elementary, Clay Elementary, Pamoja Preparatory Academy @ Cole, Dewey International Studies, Patrick Henry Downtown Academy, Hickey Elementary, Nahed Chapman New American Academy, Kennard Classical Junior Academy, Mann Elementary, Mason School of Academic & Cultural Literacy, Monroe Elementary, Mullanphy Investigative Learning Center, Peabody Elementary, Sigel Elementary, Walbridge Elementary, Washington Montessori, and Woerner Elementary.

Each school will receive nearly $4,000, and plans for the funds include the purchase of cafeteria equipment and menu boards, as well as equipment to be used for in-class activity breaks and physical education programs.

“Being able to provide Fuel Up to Play 60 program funds to amazing schools like those in St. Louis Public is a tremendous honor,” said Courtney Corbett, program manager for Midwest Dairy. “Students involved in this program are helping make their schools healthier, more active places and these funds will aid in their ability to do even more for their students and communities.”
