Thanks to the generous efforts of teachers throughout SLPS and beyond, elementary school teachers Terri and Julianna Zimmerman hit the road on September 5 with a U-Haul van packed to the gills with books, bulletin board materials, stickers, flash cards, and other fun classroom items, to donate to teachers in Moore, Okla.

When a catastrophic tornado hit Moore on May 20, 2013, the teachers at Moore Public Schools’ Plaza Towers and Briarwood elementary schools had one objective—save as many children as they could. Their classrooms were demolished by the storm.

Julianna, a teacher at Cote Brilliante, watched the news reports with her mother Terri, a teacher at Buder, and witnessed the devastation first-hand when she went to Moore the weekend after the storm to help however she could. When Julianna returned to St. Louis, she and her mother decided to go through their classroom items and piece together a trunk load of supplies to send to Moore teachers. Their focus was on the fun things that make an elementary school classroom inviting and colorful—items that teachers typically purchase themselves like bulletin board borders and stickers.

The effort started out small, but as friends and co-workers found out what the Zimmermans were planning, it blossomed—with teachers from eight SLPS schools and two other St. Louis area schools making donations totaling more than 70 boxes of classroom supplies. The items will be divided evenly between Plaza Towers Elementary and Briarwood Elementary.
