ST. LOUIS, MO. May 1, 2014 – Saint Louis Public Schools celebrated high school students who excel at balancing school work and athletics at the third-annual Scholar-Athlete Luncheon on April 30, 2014. The event, which is sponsored by the St. Louis Rams, recognized athletes who successfully complete the athletic season while maintaining a 3.25 GPA or higher.

This year, SLPS honored 473 scholar-athletes, 61 more than last year and 162 more than the first year. The event began with lunch, where scholar-athletes interacted with peers from other schools and table role models—successful adults who have a connection to athletics, including representatives from the St. Louis Rams organization.

Among the esteemed table role models were St. Louis American photographer Wiley Price, MSHSAA Executive Director Dr. Kerwin Urhahn, St. Louis Post-Dispatch sports columnist Bryan Burwell, world-record-holding sprinter Ivory Crockett, KSDK sportscaster Frank Cusumano, and Molly Higgins, vice president of corporate communications and civic affairs for the Rams.

University of Missouri-Columbia Athletic Director Mike Alden gave an inspirational keynote address and St. Louis Rams offensive lineman Barrett Jones provided words of encouragement to the students, drawing on his own experiences as a four-time Academic All-American at the University of Alabama, where he also won three National Championships.

Each scholar-athlete received a certificate signed by Dr. Kelvin R. Adams, superintendent of Saint Louis Public Schools, and a special 2013-14 Scholar-Athlete lapel pin to commemorate the occasion. The event was held at the Missouri Athletic Club in downtown St. Louis.
