Engineering students from Gateway STEM High School enjoyed a sneak peek of how it will be to cross the new Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge, slated to open to the public next month.

During a tour led by Betherny Williams, senior construction inspector with the Missouri Department of Transportation, students went to the riverfront and learned about the history and structure of the various Mississippi River bridges that connect St. Louis to Illinois. The Stan Musial Veterans Memorial Bridge is not open to the public yet, but during the second part of the tour, an SLPS bus carrying students was allowed travel over the bridge to Illinois and back.

The area’s newest bridge is a cable-stayed bridge, which uses cables attached to huge towers to support the driving surface. This design is very effective in supporting long bridges. MoDOT has scheduled an event to celebrate the completion of the bridge on Feb. 8 and will open the bridge for traffic on Feb. 9.

The field trip also included a stop at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Applied River Engineering Center.
