SLPS Art Fair at the Saint Louis ZooThirty-nine student-artists were recognized on Saturday, May 10, 2014, as winners in the 13th Annual Saint Louis Public Schools Art Fair competition. The competition is held annually at Saint Louis Zoo.
Sponsored by the St. Louis Public Schools Foundation, the Saint Louis Zoo and local philanthropists Ken and Nancy Kranzberg, the Art Fair provides an excellent showcase for the artistic talents of hundreds of SLPS students from all grade levels. This year, more than 300 students submitted entries.
Teachers develop a cross-curricular, research-based lesson that connects the visual arts with science, social studies and communication arts. Students are then instructed to create artwork that depicts wildlife in its natural habitat or promotes wildlife conservation.
The works of art were on display at the Saint Louis Zoo for two weeks for the public to enjoy. Along with first, second and third place winners in multiple categories such as Drawing 6-8 and Ceramics 9-12, three special prizes were awarded: the Superintendent’s Award, the Zoo President’s Award and the SLPS Foundation Award. A full list of winners is included below.
The panel of Art Fair judges included representatives from the Saint Louis Zoo, the Saint Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, Wells Fargo Advisors, and local universities. Winning pieces will be on display at the SLPS Central Office, 801 N. 11th Street, through the end of the school year.
