SLPS DONATES THANKSGIVING DINNER ITEMS TO LOCAL FAMILIES
The Students in Transition office organized donations for at least 75 local familiesNov. 26, 2019 – For the sixth year, the Students in Transition (SIT) office of Saint Louis Public Schools (SLPS) organized a donation drive to help more than 75 local families with food items for Thanksgiving. The effort included donations from various Central Office departments, Mallinckrodt Academy of Gifted Instruction’s PTO and individual contributions from friends of the District totaling more than 2,000 items.
Deidre Thomas-Murray, Director of the SIT office, knows first-hand what it feels like to be in need. “Hurricane Katrina left me homeless, but not hopeless,” the New Orleans native remembered. “I was always able to lean on support from the charity of people who cared. It’s why organizing events like this is very important to me.”
Families visited Central Office today to pick up baskets of items commonly prepared for the Thanksgiving holiday, including turkeys, macaroni and cheese, cornbread and cranberry sauce. First Student, the District’s bus transportation supplier, was on hand to pick-up and deliver baskets of food to families unable to make the trip to Central Office.
