On February 14, Clyde C. Miller Career Academy juniors in the Hospitality Pathway were invited to the National Society of Minorities in Hospitality conference held at the St. Louis Union Station Hotel—A Doubletree Hotel. The students participated in fun conference sessions designed especially for them.

During the half-day program, NSMH alumni, who are now hospitality industry professionals working with various companies across the United States, gave the students insight about college and their personal journeys. Advice included completing college applications and essays, selecting a college and choosing a major.

The students also had a chance to show off their skills in the “Hospitality Olympics.” Miller students competed against two other schools in bed making, napkin folding, and other hospitality-related tasks.

The day wrapped up with an interactive panel and lunch with NSMH alumni.

The activities on February 14 capped two days of NSMH-related activities for Miller students. On February 12, five college students who are chapter board members of NSMH came to the school and shared their unique stories on how they got to college and some of the challenges they faced.

The moderator, NSMH Advisory Board Chair Janice Taylor, gave motivational strategies to show the students that dreams are possible if you take the steps to make your life what you want. There were about 75 sophomores and juniors in attendance.

Both events were part of the NSMH High School Track sponsored by Hyatt Hotels.
