Gateway Class of 2014 PLTW Engineering Projects Presentation Night
On April 17, seniors from Gateway STEM High School’s engineering program presented their work to a panel of experts, their mentors, school staff and family members. Participating students are completing the Project Lead The Way (PLTW) yearlong capstone course, in which students work in small teams to find and solve an original problem. They follow a deliberate process of exploration, design and testing, working with mentors from industry. The event was a success with a variety of solutions and one—a multifunction ceiling light—attracting potential further review by industry.
The previous Friday, Gateway STEM students participated in the PLTW Design Showcase at Ameren with other schools including Kirkwood, Ritenour, Hazelwood and Mehlville.
Student teams, their problems and mentors follow:
Rashad Battle, Sydney Cowins, Brandon Oatts:
Cell phones run out of charge walking home. It would be nice to have an affordable solar powered backpack charger accessory.
Mentor: Mike Hill, Custom Products Innovations
Ahmed Ahmed, Paul Gmoser, Terrell Ross
Kitchen knives are used extensively. We think opportunities exist for safer storage with a removable knife handle.
Mentor: Lyle Hardin, CDG Engineers
Aida Bukvic, Myra Farmer, Ky Ho
Current FIRST spur gearboxes with motors parallel to the output shaft take up space in the center of a FRC robot. We hope to create an arrangement allowing more space in the center.
Mentor: Mr. Mark Holly, Boeing
Reid Chunn, Nick McKee, Aaron Petty
Bags are hard to pull out of trash cans and often rip.
Mentor: Nathan Hull, Boeing
Mina Nguyen, Terrence Lovett
Game console incorporated with a rocking chair.
Mentor: Mr. Richard Doerr, Premier Prosthetics & Orthotics
Kumar Diyali, Pawan Khapangi, Loc Nguyen
Opportunity to use LEDs in car/truck trailer-hitch plugs for eye-catching marketing and safety.
Mentors: Mr. Paul Lodewyck, Chemical Engineering, and Mr. Mike Hill, Custom Products Innovations
Hem Biswa, Durga Chuhan
Flood and spot ceiling lights can be controlled by a multifunction wall switch or remote control.
Mentor: Ms. Marjorie Melton, M3 Engineering Group
Lokesh Gurung, Tyrone Maufas, Tho Nguyen
There is potential for a better video game table.
Mentor: Mr. Rick Lodewyck, CDG Engineers
