Dr. Kelvin R. Adams to lead District through 2016

ST. LOUIS, MO, February 6, 2014 The Special Administrative Board of the St. Louis Public School District has approved a two-year contract extension for Dr. Kelvin R. Adams to continue as Superintendent of Schools.  Dr. Adams is now under contract through June 30, 2016, providing the District with stable leadership for eight consecutive school years.

“Dr. Adams has improved academics and stabilized the District’s finances.  His strong leadership skills have helped to restore community confidence in the District.   Under his direction, the St. Louis Public School District has risen from an Unaccredited district to earn Provisional Accreditation from the Missouri State Board of Education.  The Special Administrative Board is very pleased to have him leading the District through 2016,” said SAB Vice President Melanie Adams.

Ms. Adams led a national search that brought Dr. Adams to the District as superintendent in the fall of 2008.  During Dr. Adams’ tenure, the St. Louis Public School District has not only shown steady academic gains but has improved its financial position as well.   The District has not only eliminated its debt, but has operated with a balanced budget for each of the past three school years and anticipates ending with a balanced budget for the current school year.

Dr. Adams has instituted several academic initiatives under his “Creating Great Options” banner.  In addition to pilot schools, an African-Centered Curriculum school,   and greater school choice for District students, Dr. Adams has expanded the number of full-day seats for preschool students by more than 50% during his time as superintendent.  He has also forged a ground-breaking partnership with the KIPP charter schools that will result in improved learning facilities for children and collaborative professional development opportunities for teachers.
