Dewey 5th Grade Spanish Class Students Raise Money For “Color the World” Project

A Project Based Learning project at Dewey International Studies Elementary School has been a big success for the students in teacher Leslie Rahn’s 5th grade Spanish class. The students were given a task of finding out about the country of Nicaragua and to learn what “fair trade” means.  In addition, the students were assigned to partner with a fair trade non-profit that works with children in a Nicaraguan youth shelter.  The students partnered with the Si a la Vida shelter, which means “Say yes to life” in Spanish.

Dewey students set a goal of raising $500 to send to Si a la Vida.  They sold pulseras –  handmade woven bracelets – for $5 each.  Not only did the class reach its goal, they more than doubled it by raising $1,100.  Congratulations to Dewey on a job well done.
