    SLPS Offers Parent Guidebooks for English Language Arts & Mathematics

    The St. Louis Public School District has partnered with the Council of the Great City Schools to create Parent Guidebooks in English Language Arts and Mathematics in efforts to provide parents with a roadmap for helping their child achieve the most success in school.     SLPS EARNS 7 ACCREDITATION POINTS

    The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has released the final Annual Performance Report (APR) data for all public school districts in Missouri.  The St. Louis Public School District received seven (7) APR points towards accreditation and now qualifies for provisional accreditation as defined by DESE’s published guidelines for accreditation. 

     

    First Day Of School Attendances Increases Almost 2000 From Last Year

    A total of 20,283 students attended classes on the first day, marking an increase of 10.25% over the previous year’s first day attendance of 18,397. 

     

    Peabody Energy Leaders in Education Names Brian O'Connor as “Educator of the Year”

    Brian O’Connor of Nottingham Community Access and Job Training (CAJT) High School has been named the Peabody Energy Leaders in Education “Educator of the Year.” Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon announced O’Connor’s accolade at a celebration that included more than 300 academic, business and civic community members. 

     

    Sigel School Receives $25,000 Grant From Target

    “I’m having a blast traveling on the Target ‘Bullseye Bus’ and celebrating with schools across the country,” said Disney Channel actress and Hollywood Records recording artist Bridgit Mendler. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me and Target to surprise these schools with the $25,000 grants. There’s nothing better than seeing the smiles on the students’ faces and knowing we've made a difference for so many students.”

     

    SLPS DISCUS Award Winners Announced

    The Saint Louis Public School District is home to eight Discus Award Winners for the recently completed 2011-2012 school year. The Discus Award is a non-monetary national recognition honoring the most well-rounded high school students across the country. The SLPS students represent eight different high schools. 

     

    Woerner Elementary Named Missouri School Of The Year

    For the second time in the 19-year history of the Do The Right Thing (DTRT) Program, Woerner Elementary School in the Saint Louis Public School District has been selected as the Missouri School of the Year.

     

    UMSL STARS PROGRAM SENDS GATEWAY STUDENT TO DANFORTH PLANT SCIENCE CENTER

    Aadaisia Paris Stevens, a student at Gateway STEM High School, had the distinct honor of being mentored by some of the region’s best and brightest scientists as part of the 2012 Students and Teachers as Research Scientists Program (STARS) at the University of Missouri–St. Louis.

     

    SLPS Awarded $2.2 Million Grant for Physical & Nutrition Education

    The St. Louis Public School District has received $744,987.00 for the first year of a three-year grant issued by the U.S. Department of Education’s Carol M. White Physical Education Program (PEP) to provide physical education and nutrition education at the District’s elementary schools. SLPS is the only school district in Missouri to receive this grant.

     

    St. Louis Rams, PHL Inc., and SLPS Unveil New Athletic Facility at Gateway STEM High School

    The St. Louis Public School District, in conjunction with the St. Louis Rams and PHL Inc., hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to unveil the new athletic facility at Gateway STEM High School.  The new athletic facility will be available for use by Gateway STEM’s athletic teams, school physical education courses, marching band, other schools athletic events, as well as a site for community athletic and recreational programs.

     

    Excellence Award Announced by 99Billion Better Learning & Behavior Center

    Monica Miller, Principal, and Marilyn Jackson, Counselor, from Nance Elementary School have been awarded the Excellence Award from 99Billion Better Learning & Behavior Center, INC. Their names were submitted to 99BB to be recognized as a team working collaboratively with parents, students, and outside agencies to increase teaching & learning.  Congratulations!

     

    SLPS Graduates Named 2012 Gates Millennium Scholars

    Remy Gates, a 2012 graduate from Metro Academic &Classical High School, and Abraham Shaw, a 2012 graduate from McKinley Classical Leadership Academy, have been named finalists in the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, which provides substantial scholarship awards to exceptional high school seniors for study at the college of their choice. Eligible applicants must have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale, demonstrated leadership skills, and a financial need. It was established in 1999 thanks to a $1 billion grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

     

    Nottingham CAJT H.S. kicks off the school year by honoring the Olympics

    The students and staff at Nottingham Community Access & Job Training (CAJT) High School kicked off their school year with a celebration honoring the 2012 Olympic Games. Each advisory classroom at Nottingham CAJT H.S. researched a country that participated in the 2012 Olympic Games. Kicking off the festivities was a Parade of Nations followed by relay races for students, faculty and staff. Throughout the first week of school, students were also given daily oral reports about each country during their lunch hour, and then participated in team building events in the afternoon while representing their chosen country.

     

    Ranken Summer Adventure Academy 2012 a Success

    During the weeks of July 16-20 and July 23-27, students from around the District were invited to attend the Ranken Summer Adventure Academy. Students were allowed to choose from a variety of STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math) classes which included Air Brush, Robotics, Construction Design and Build, wheelie car production, and NASCAR test and development. Students worked with Ranken Instructors in the areas of Industrial Painting and Air Brush as well as NASCAR assembly and testing.  Barbara Bragg, Ranken STEM coordinator, felt that SLPS students and parents showed a tremendous interest in STEM activities and applauded their attention and effort during the camp week.

    Mallinckrodt Academy of Gifted Instruction would like to thank their congregational partners, Gethsemane Lutheran Church and St. Joan of Arc, for pulling numerous resources together in efforts of providing a Health Fair for Mallinckrodt families and community members. It was a wonderful event and a great kick-off to the new school year.

     

    Leaving a Lasting Legacy

    Metro Academic and Classical High School’s graduated class of 2012 left a legacy gift for current and future students. The Panther, Metro’s mascot, was only a name until the graduated class of 2012 pulled together to raise enough money to buy a mascot costume for the school.  The ferocious beast was unveiled during Freshman Orientation as a happy surprise for the new students.

     

    Upcoming Events

    Gateway Greening to Install Garden at Cleveland NJROTC

    On August 28th, Gateway Greening will be working with the students of Cleveland NJROTC to install a new school garden. The garden is made possible thanks to a grant through Gateway Greening, which has installed numerous school gardens, increasing the health and wellness of SLPS students throughout the District.

     

    Magnet and Choice School Applications will be available on September 1.

    Holiday

    The St. Louis Public School District will be closed on September 3 in observance of Labor Day.
