ST. LOUIS, MO. March 4, 2013 – Today, Soldan International Studies High School received a large donation from Fidelity Investments, through the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, to enhance the school’s music program. The donation, which was comprised of 14 musical instruments, is valued at more than $22,000.

“I would like to thank Fidelity Investments for their support,” said Ms. Chrisena Brown, Band Director/Music Teacher at Soldan. “I can assure you that the instruments will be well used.”

Currently, the Music Department at Soldan offers performance classes for woodwind, brass and percussion students, including Beginning Instruments for the novice; Intermediate Band for the student who has mastered a minimum of one year on an instrument; and Concert/Marching Band for the experienced musician.  Non-performance classes are also offered and specialize in multicultural music, which introduces students to traditional and non-traditional "world music".  Thanks to the donation from Fidelity Investments, through the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation, the Department received 5 clarinets, 3 alto saxophones, 3 flutes, 1 tuba, 1 piccolo, and 1 xylophone.

“A couple of years ago, Fidelity started a program to support arts education in public schools all over the country and to help bring more music into classrooms. We heard that Soldan High School was really talented, and we obviously picked the right school,” said Mr. Brian Hayes, VP and Branch Manager at Fidelity’s Chesterfield Investor Center, who was on-site to present the instruments at a surprise all-school assembly.
