ST. LOUIS, MO. December 13, 2012 – The St. Louis Public School District is pleased to recognize Mr. Michael Butler, an educator at Ashland Elementary, who has been elected to the Missouri House of Representatives.  He will represent the 79th District during his tenure.

“My childhood home was located near the corner of Shaw Blvd and South Spring Ave., and I remember playing tag at the Compton Reservoir Park. This district is home to me,” said Butler.

A former kindergarten and fifth grade teacher at Ashland Elementary, Butler became a building level substitute at Ashland Elementary to meet the demands of elected office.  He is now in Jefferson City setting up his legislative office and preparing bills to file.

“Our government needs to take a more proactive role in supporting our community by funding programs that encourage workforce development and education while keeping our neighborhoods safe. I plan on to take ownership of these issues and provide real solutions,” he said.

Butler, who won a highly contested democratic primary in August, and ran unopposed in the November election, received 15,225 votes.  His platform centered around three major issues:

    ·         Jobs- supporting the “Missouri Back to Work” program

    ·         Education-supporting teachers with continuous professional development, salary increases, and community programs

    ·         Crime-supporting a statewide neighborhood ownership model

Butler holds a Masters in Public Affairs from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Bachelors degree in Business from Alabama A&M University, where he served as President of the Student Government and a Board of Trustee member.  Currently, he serves as a board member for the National Black College Student Government Association (NBCSGA). Michael is also a member of the Young Non-Profit Professional Network and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc.
