St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay and SLPS alum Demetrious Johnson helped kick off the First Annual Embrace The Puzzle 5K Run/Walk at Gateway STEM High School.  Proceeds from the event are used to support the Gateway STEM High School autism program.  The Mayor and Johnson served as honorary chairs for the event.

Gateway STEM Principal Dr. Beth Bender led an excited group of students and supporters in following Mayor Slay and Johnson in the first of 12 laps around the school's track.  Some students walked, some jogged and others raced at a quick pace to complete the 12 laps.  All involved had a wonderful time and were thankful to the Mayor and Johnson for participating in their event.

Said Bender, "The students, staff and families are always looking for ways to improve the autism program at Gateway.  The Embrace The Puzzle 5K Walk/Run not only raises awareness about autism, but will also assist in raising the necessary funds to help us enhance our fine work."

The Embrace The Puzzle 5K Walk/Run was coordinated by Gateway STEM High School PTO President Kim Rickert and Gateway STEM High School teacher Christine Lato.

"The Autism Program staff and students would like to express our sincere appreciation to the many people and businesses in the community who have so generously given their time, energy and money and provided such wonderful incentives for the students.  You are an inspiration to us all."
