     Woerner

In December, 4th and 5th grade boys at Woerner Elementary School connected their classroom investigative and problem solving learning to the “real” world.  Twenty-one boys from the single gender class of Mr. Keith T. Williams met with a head engineer (Randy Hitt of MODOT) at the Pump House to learn about the construction of the New Mississippi River Bridge (timeline, function and purpose, engineered construction, cost, and career options associated with the bridge project) and compared these finding with historic bridges of the St. Louis Metropolitan area.

An Le, 5th grader at Woerner, stated, “The Mississippi River Bridge Project was phenomenal! It allowed us to be scientists, team learners, and gave us an opportunity to find out about how the workers and engineers really build the New Mississippi River Bridge.”

This part of the field trip was followed up with an enjoyable lunch at The Old Spaghetti Factory and a trip to the office of the License Collector (Michael McMillan) where they learned about the City Hall operations and a visit to the Mayor’s office. This was a complete day of learning by exposing students to skills required in the workplace.

     DeBoise's avid class

The faculty and staff at Carnahan High School of the Future would like to applaud Ms. DeBoise’s junior AVID class for selecting and adopting a family of five for the holidays as part of a service learning project.  The family consists of a 22 year-old single mother of four boys ages 5, 3, 1, and 6 months. They raised money for four weeks and managed to purchase several toys, clothes, and shoes.  They even received a donation to give a Play Station 2 gaming system.

     Rams

Unbeknownst to his teacher, Jacob Cox-Scott, a fourth grade student at Hickey Elementary, entered a RAMS essay contest by writing about why his teacher, Mrs. Cynthia Sanders, is the best.  He won, and Rampage and a few of the team’s cheerleaders stopped by the school to congratulate Mrs. Sanders for being an exceptional teacher.
