ST. LOUIS, MO. March 28, 2013 – Shaw Visual and Performing Arts Elementary School has been named a recipient of the SupportMusic Merit Award as part of the NAMM Foundation’s Best Communities for Music Education Program.  Shaw VPA is the only school in Missouri to earn the prestigious award this year.

Awarded only to 66 schools nationally, the SupportMusic Merit Award is presented to schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement in efforts to provide music access and education to all students.

“This award means a lot to our school. It validates our hard work providing the best music, arts and general education we can to the children of St. Louis City,” said Carolyn M. Kramkowski, Director of Instrumental Music at Shaw VPA.

To qualify for the award, approximately 2,000 schools from around the country answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities, support for the music program and community music-making programs.  Responses were verified with schools officials and reviewed by The Institute for Educational Research and Public Service of Lawrence, Kan., an affiliate of Kansas University.

The SupportMusic Merit Award is an important part of the NAMM Foundation’s efforts to advocate for school-based music education. Numerous studies have demonstrated that learning to play music can boost other academic and social skills, such as math and learning to cooperate in a group.
