• ST. LOUIS, MO. August 22, 2012 – The St. Louis Public School District has partnered with the Council of the Great City Schools to create Parent Guidebooks in English Language Arts and Mathematics in efforts to provide parents with a roadmap for helping their child achieve the most success in school.

“Parents that are engaged in their children’s education tend to have students that are more academically successful in the classroom. Through a new partnership with the Council of Great City Schools, SLPS has created an innovative and exciting avenue for parents to know and understand what is being taught in the classroom and how they can reinforce these concepts at home,” said Dr. Nicole Williams, Chief Academic Officer.

The District is also revising the way courses are taught in English Language Arts and Mathematics to prepare students for the academic demands of college as well as the skill demand of careers available today and in the future.

In English Language Arts and Literacy, students will continue reading and writing. But in addition to stories and literature, students will read more texts that provide facts and background knowledge in areas including science and social studies. They will read more challenging texts and be asked more questions that will require them to refer back to what they have read. There will also be an increased emphasis on building a strong vocabulary so that students can read and understand challenging material.

In Mathematics, teachers will concentrate on teaching a more focused set of major math concepts and skills. This will allow students time to master important ideas and skills in a more organized way throughout the year and from one grade to the next. It will also call for teachers to use rich and challenging math content and to engage students in solving real-world problems in order to inspire greater interest in mathematics.
