ST. LOUIS, MO. December 21, 2011 – Starting January 1, 2012, the St. Louis Public School District will become a Tobacco-Free institution.
Approved by the Special Administrative Board, the Tobacco-Free Workplace Policy prohibits smoking at any time on District-owned, leased or occupied facilities or at events on SLPS properties. Included in this policy is District-owned, rented or leased vehicles, parking facilities and lots. Smoking is also prohibited in District buildings located near city/municipality owned sidewalks, within 20 feet of entry ways or exits, near air intakes, or near fire/explosion hazards.
“Tobacco use is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, cancer and respiratory disease. By creating a tobacco-free workplace the District hopes to improve the health and wellness of students, their families, and faculty and staff,” said Dr. Kelvin Adams, Superintendent.
The Tobacco-Free Workplace Policy is mandatory for students, faculty, and staff. Parents, guardians, and community partners are required to adhere to the policy as well.
Faculty and staff requesting assistance to quit smoking can call Human Resources at (314) 345-2295. For more information please contact the Office of Public Information (314) 345-2367.
