ST. LOUIS, MO. January 18, 2012 – Today, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in conjunction with Carnahan High School of the Future hosted a special awards presentation to honor Anthony “Tony” Thompson, president and CEO of the Kwame Building Group, for his longstanding dedication to the students of the St. Louis Public School District.
Presented with a certificate by Thomas Metz, FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge, Tony Thompson was recognized with the 2011 FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award (DCLA), which honors those who provide civil rights education and puts forth efforts to combat crime.
“He exemplifies all the characteristics that the students aspire to,” said Bruce Green, principal at Carnahan High School of the Future.
Through the Tyrone Thompson Institute for Nonviolence and the Kwame Foundation, Tony Thompson provides SLPS students with much needed services like tutoring, mentoring, scholarships, and career opportunities. At Carnahan High School of the Future, Tony Thompson serves as the corporate sponsor of the Gentlemen’s Club and attends the regularly scheduled meetings to ensure that students remain on the academic path to graduation. Since its establishment in 2005, the Gentlemen’s Club has maintained 100% graduation rate and all have pursued higher education options.
“Tony doesn’t sugarcoat the facts, and as a teenage male I can appreciate that because it prepares me for the choices I make and what I want for my future. He shows us respect and commands respect in return,” said Imani Bennett, president of the Gentlemen’s Club.
Since 1990, the FBI has recognized individuals and organizations with the Director’s Community Leadership Award whose achievements in the terrorism, crime, drug, gang or violence prevention/education field had an exemplary impact on the community. FBI Director Robert S. Mueller, III, will officially present Tony Thompson with the 2011 DCLA during a formal ceremony at FBI Headquarters in Washington, D.C., on March 16, 2012.For more information please contact the Office of Public Information (314) 345-2367.
