ST. LOUIS, MO. May 1, 2012 –Cardinals Care & Learn and Serve Missouri, in cooperation with CHARACTERplus, have named Woerner Elementary a 2012 Champion for Character School. Woerner is one of three schools across the state of Missouri honored with the award, and is also the only elementary school to earn the title.
Now in its eighth year, the Champions for Character program recognizes schools for integrating service-learning into the school curriculum and school culture. A panel of community judges reviewed applications that described student-led service projects with curriculum-based learning.
To present Woerner Elementary with the honor, Fredbird stopped by the school for an all-school assembly and posed for pictures. In addition, the school will be recognized during a special pre-game on-field ceremony before the Cardinals game on Wednesday, May 2.
This is the second character award this academic year for Woerner Elementary, who was named the 2011 Missouri “Do the Right Thing” School of the Year back in September. Located at 6131 Leona, Woerner Elementary, a neighborhood school, serves approximately 380 students in gender-specific classrooms.
