• ST. LOUIS, MO.  April 24, 2012 – Adam Benckendorf, a senior at Metro Academic and Classical High School, has been awarded St. Louis University’s Presidential Scholarship. This four-year, full-tuition award will fund his undergraduate studies in Investigative & Medical Sciences.

To qualify for the Presidential Scholarship, Benckendorf had to have a cumulative GPA of 3.85 or higher and score at least a 30 on the ACT or 1330 (math and critical reading) on the SAT.  According to St. Louis University’s website, the Presidential Scholarship represents some of the “most exemplary student leaders on St. Louis University’s campus.”

Inspired by his grandfather, Nikolaus Foerster, a retired orthotist who created orthotic braces and prosthetic limbs for children at Shriners Hospital, Adam Benckendorf received the District’s Spirit of Excellence Award in 2011 for his breadth of knowledge and engaging attitude while participating in the Saturday Scholars and Excellence in Learning programs.

A collaboration between the University of Missouri, Washington University and the St. Louis Public School District, the Saturday Scholars and Excellence in Learning programs provide an intense immersion experience in the medical field.  Highlights of the programs include job shadowing of doctors and other medical personnel, mentoring programs with doctors and college students, and lecture panels and workshops on topics like surgical skills, human anatomy and physiology, and pathogens.

In addition to receiving the Spirit of Excellence Award, Adam Benckendorf received recognition after building a 20’x32’ pavilion, complete with picnic tables and benches, at McKinley Classical Junior Academy for his Eagle Scout service project. The Goldbug Pavilion is currently in use and part of the alumni association’s school revitalization efforts.
