January 2012- In December, the Carson Scholars Fund issued a challenge to all of the St. Louis Ben Carson Reading Room schools. The school that read the most leisure minutes would be rewarded with a rare visit by Dr. Carson. The 482 students at Gateway Middle School for Science and Technology rose to the challenge and logged over 24,345 minutes of reading in a five week period. On Friday, January 27, Dr. and Mrs. Carson made good on their promise by visiting the school.
During his visit, Dr. Ben Carson regaled students with his notable “THINK BIG” presentation and stopped by the Ben Carson Reading Room.
About the THINK BIG presentation:
THINK BIG is Dr. Ben Carson’s philosophy which promotes outstanding academic achievement and dedication to helping others. Children, students, and adults have all found that when they THINK BIG, they are on their way to achieving their goals.
T -is for Talent/time: Recognize them as giftsH -Hope for good things and be honest
I -Insight from people and good books
N -Be nice to all people
K -Knowledge: Recognize it as the key to living
B -Books: Read them activelyI -in-depth learning skills: Develop them
G -Dr. Carson’s "G" is for God. Everyone has their own beliefs. When you THINK BIG, what does the "G" stand for in your life?
Dr. Carson explains, “The ‘Think Big’ expression is another way of restating one of my mother's favorite sayings, when I was struggling in school and teased by classmates." She would tell me, “You can do anything they can do, only you must try to do it better.”
THINK BIG became Dr. Carson's formula for personal success. In his book with the same name, he sets forth his philosophy of living by drawing upon his youth experiences, and present profession as Chief of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Johns Hopkins Children's Center.
About Dr. Ben Carson’s previous visit to dedicate the Ben Carson Reading Room
On January 22, 2007, Dr. and Mrs. Carson, and dedicated faculty from St. Louis University attended a press conference and ceremony celebrating the opening of Ben Carson Reading Rooms at Carr Lane Visual and Performing Arts Middle School; Compton Drew Investigative Learning Center; Gateway Elementary and Middle School; Kennard Classical Junior Academy; Mullanphy Investigative Learning Center; and Shaw Visual Arts Center.
The Ben Carson Reading Project is the second initiative of the Carson Scholars Fund. The primary purpose of the program is to provide funding and support to local schools so that they can create a nurturing environment for children to feel safe and secure as they develop their reading skills. The Reading Project is dedicated to combating illiteracy and promoting leisure reading as a key to unlocking a child's potential. Each room is filled with hundreds of books for students to explore from a variety of authors, topics, and genres. The Reading Room is decorated with attractive, eye catching artwork based on Dr. Carson's "THINK BIG" philosophy.
