• March 2012-Recently, students participating in the St. Louis Public School District’s Saturday Scholars program had the honor of attending an awards luncheon at Washington University to present their findings on pathogens.

     

    The Saturday Scholars program is part of a three-pronged partnership among St. Louis Public Schools, Washington University School of Medicine and the University of Missouri Medical School. The partnership is spearheaded by retired SLPS administrator Shirley Brown and its roots date back to the 1981/1982 school year.

     

    In addition to the Saturday Scholars program, SLPS students also participate in a Health Professions" Fair at Washington University School of Medicine and the Excellence In Learning program on the campus of the University of Missouri at Columbia. A total of 96 SLPS students took part in the Health Professions" Fair to learn about health related career opportunities. SLPS will send the above referenced 25 students to visit MIZZOU in April for the Excellence In Learning program, where they will participate in problem based learning workshops and shadow health professionals.

     

    Support from SLPS teachers and administrators, along with key staffers at both Washington University School of Medicine and the University of Missouri Medical School are invaluable aids to the longevity and success of this program which now boasts doctors and medical school students as alums. Lending support from Washington University School of Medicine are: Dr. Will Ross MD, Associate Dean for Diversity Programs, Lisa Stevenson, Director for Diversity programs and Kim Lipsey, Reference Librarian, Becker Medical Library. Offering support and guidance from the University of Missouri Medical School are: Dr. Ellis Ingram MD, Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion, Allison Martin, Director of Admissions and Jen Rachow, Program Coordinator.
