History

Gateway STEM High School was developed in response to a court order mandating the establishment of a high technology magnet high school. The opening of the original Gateway Institute of Technology in August of 1992 introduced a totally new concept in education to the metropolitan St. Louis area.

This magnet school integrates a strong academic curriculum emphasizing mathematics and science with career preparation in highly technical fields. Accelerated and advanced placement courses are available for students. Inquiry, innovation, creativity and exploration are encouraged throughout the school. Gateway was recognized by the United States Department of Education as a New American High School. Only ten high schools were given the honor in 1998. Gateway serves as a model school, and is visited regularly by educators.  The school was also featured in several books and a video of best practices in United States high schools which were developed by and are distributed by the U.S. Department of Education. In 2017, Gateway STEM was ranked #37 in all Missouri High Schools by U.S. News and world reports.

 

Gateway strives to be one of the finest high schools in the nation. Gateway STEM integrates a rigorous and relevant academic curriculum, emphasizing mathematics and science, with career preparation programs in high tech fields, with the objective of skill building, team building, real-life applications, community services, and lifelong learning.

 

The student population is drawn from the entire metropolitan area, both urban and suburban. Students apply and are selected through specific criteria.  The student population includes a wide range of students, including but not limited to gifted, ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) orthopedically handicapped, learning disabled, behavior disordered, and autistic.

 

The student population for 2017-18 is currently at 1,160.
