Gateway STEM ESOL Department Overview

  •  Gateway STEM High School has the largest high school ESOL program in the city.  This year we have approximately 370 students who are English Language Learners.  Our students come from over 40 countries and speak almost 30 languages.

The primary goal of our program is to help students improve their English competency in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  The primary method of instruction is through ESOL classes and sheltered content area classes in Communication Arts, Math, Science, History and Government.  SLPS has adopted the SIOP model of instruction which is a research based method of using sheltered instruction to make the content more comprehensible.

Through ESOL classes and sheltered classes in core subject areas, we strive to prepare our student for success in college or career after high school.  Our students are learners today and leaders tomorrow!

The ESOL teaching team includes highly qualified and certified staff with many years of teaching experience.  Our ESOL teachers come from a variety of educational backgrounds and have experience teaching in the USA and overseas.
