    MARYLAND HEIGHTS •
Gov. Jay Nixon visited Pattonville High School Monday to recognize the school as one of several in the area that allow students to earn college credit and career experience through local partnerships.

Nearly $1.3 million in grants were announced this year to establish the“Innovative High Schools” program at Pattonville plus some in the Ferguson-Florissant and St. Louis districts. They will work with St. Louis Community College and local businesses to offer students college credit courses and experience in fields such as advanced manufacturing, health sciences and information technology.

“It’s not enough anymore for schools simply to teach the basics,” Nixon said. “If we want to maintain a competitive edge on not just our neighboring states, but on competitors around the globe, we need to make sure that our schools work with businesses, and with industry, to align their curriculum in away that benefits everyone: students, employers, and the economy.”

Pattonville High received $500,000. St. Louis Community College will offer students associate degree level courses at the school and at satellite campuses.

St. Louis Public Schools also received nearly $500,000 to offer dual-credit courses with SLCC at Beaumont, Vashon, Gateway STEM and Clyde C. Miller high schools.

Ferguson-Florissant received $289,800 to bring advanced manufacturing training to McCluer High School for any student in the district.
