ST. LOUIS — The Missouri State Board of Education plans to review the accreditation status of the St. Louis Public Schools at its meeting on Oct. 16, the board said Friday.

The Special Administrative Board in charge of the district had asked the state to consider upgrading the district's status to provisional accreditation, saying it would provide a more accurate picture of the schools.

"We will be taking time to consider the district's request in the next few weeks before making a recommendation to the board," Commissioner Chris Nicastro said in a statement. "The board has the final authority on accreditation classification determinations."

The department of education is reviewing the request and the school data.

The Special Administrative Board was put in place upon the district's loss of accreditation in 2007.
