St. Louis Public Schools K-12 Virtual Schools

St. Louis Public Schools’ Virtual School is beginning the 2008-2009 school year. This year, courses are offered in grades K-8 and 9-12. K-8 courses begin August 18, 2008. High School courses begin September 8, 2008. We are currently accepting applications for grades K-8 and 9-12. Elementary students receive textbooks, workbooks and other instructional material in addition to the online environment. All textbooks are online for high school students. All students in grades 1-8 are required to take Placement tests prior to beginning coursework.

The implementation of SLPS Virtual Schools is a part of the pioneering effort in St. Louis Public Schools to address the needs of all children anytime, anywhere, any place, any path and any pace. A “virtual school” is defined as an educational organization that offers K-12 courses through Internet or Web-based methods. Virtual K-12 is a form of distance education. Distance education might be defined as “formal education” in which instruction occurs while the teacher and learner are separate. The instructor led online courses are conducted by Missouri certified teachers using Missouri aligned curriculum.

Families that reside in the city of St. Louis are eligible to enroll in the SLPS Virtual School. Students residing in eligible districts may enroll. Home school students, charter school students, private, school students and students enrolled in faith-based schools may enroll. Eligible districts include Affton, Bayless, Brentwood, Clayton, Hancock Place, Kirkwood, Ladue, Lindbergh, Mehlville, Parkway, Pattonville, Ritenour, Rockwood, Valley Park, and Webster Groves.

The St. Louis Public Schools Virtual School provides a convenient and flexible way to address student needs in the areas of credit advancement, credit recovery, alternative education, homebound, special education, scheduling conflicts, courses not offered by St. Louis Public Schools and students not currently served by SLPS. Full time Virtual students and parents are required to participate in 1-3 face to face meetings per week with their Virtual School teacher at the SLPS Virtual School Learning Centers. Part-time Virtual students are required to attend the designated computer lab after school in their home high school 4 hours per week. Parents are required to attend 2 parent meetings per semester. Parent workshops are conducted bi-monthly. For additional information, please contact virtualschools@slps.org
