SLPS ANNOUNCES MILES OF CONTAMINATED CHAIN LINK TO BE REMOVED OVER SUMMER

We have great news regarding planned upgrades across the district! On July 11, leaders of Saint Louis Public Schools (SLPS) will host a groundbreaking event kicking off the replacement of more than 6.2 miles of lead contaminated chain link fencing across 21 sites (see listing below)

Safety is always a top priority at SLPS and we can all be proud of the proactive way our District leaders, Operations team and environmental partners have worked to eradicate any safety concerns about lead fencing.

Starting over the summer, the team will remove 650 liner feet of chain link from our school grounds. Please note that this project applies only to the chain link fencing.  The historic wrought iron throughout the district is structurally sound and will be cleaned and encased in new paint. The chain link, however, would pose an ongoing maintenance and safety issue and the cost would be prohibitive to try to maintain it.

The fence project is managed by partners Environmental Consultants, LLC and Navigate Building Solutions will go through the summer and, with anticipated shipping delays, possibly into fall.

This $2 million project is being paid for by a combination of state and federal funding; House Bill 20 (HB20), which provides for infrastructure and other improvements across the state and the federal government’s Elementary and Secondary Emergency Relief Fund (ESSER III).
