Community Invited to Discuss Future of SLPS Governance
ST. LOUIS, MO. October 24, 2017 – The Saint Louis Public School District is hosting a series of community engagement sessions to gather public input prior to the Special Administrative Board (SAB) making a recommendation to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) regarding the future governance of the District. Each meeting will feature an expert presenter to discuss different types of governing structures being utilized by public school districts around the country.
Mr. Richard K. Gaines of the Special Administrative Board will serve as chairman of the committee. The public meetings will be facilitated by Vector Communications. Community members will have an opportunity to attend the meetings, watch via live-streaming, and read transcripts of the meetings on the District’s website.
“The Special Administrative Board has faithfully served the Saint Louis Public School District for 10 years and the time has come to transition to the next governing body,” said Gaines. “As required by law, our final responsibility as members of the SAB is to make a recommendation to DESE regarding the future governance of the District. In order to do so, we want to engage our stakeholders in the process.”
“At these community meetings, experts in the various forms of governance will make presentations, followed by open discussion and public comments regarding the pros and cons of each form of governance. These meeting will give our community members an unprecedented opportunity to have a voice in the future of the District’s oversight. Following the public engagement meetings, the SAB will review all data gathered and make a recommendation to DESE,” added Gaines.
