ST. LOUIS, MO. January 15, 2015 – Cleveland NJROTC Academy has been selected by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as a National Title I Distinguished School. Each state may only name two schools to receive this special designation per year—one in each of the following categories:

Category 1: A school that has exceeded its adequate yearly progress for two or more years.

Category 2: A school that has significantly closed the achievement gap between student groups.

Cleveland NJROTC was selected for national recognition because of the success of its educational programs and progress made by students, earning the spot for Category 2. Hickory County R-1 (Skyline) Elementary School was designated by DESE for Category 1.

Cleveland NJROTC—and all other selected Distinguished Schools throughout the country—will be recognized at a parade at the opening of the National Title I Conference next month (Feb. 5-8) in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Dr. Susan Viviano is the principal of Cleveland NJROTC, a fully accredited Saint Louis Public Schools magnet school. She plans to represent the District at the conference.

"It has been a journey for Cleveland," said Dr. Viviano. "Everyone has worked so hard for so long. We are surprised, delighted, and—yes—proud of what we have been able to achieve together. It is a deep down sort of happy, the kind that comes from someplace inside us—that our work together has been validated and our school nationally recognized and honored. To be perfectly honest, I just wanted to run down the hall and yell, 'Yipeee, we did it!'”

The National Title I Distinguished Schools Program is a project of the National Title I Association, which publicly recognizes schools for their positive educational advances. The school district was notified of the award via a letter from Dennis Cooper, assistant commissioner, Office of Quality Schools for the Missouri Department of Education.
