Ms. Darcus Burns

My name is Darcus Burns. I am a special education teacher, and I teach 6-8th grade Humanities. I have taught special education for 23 years at SLPS, both elementary and middle school.

Prior to teaching I worked in social services as a program manager and case manager for homeless families in transition and I created educational events and activities for children and adults. I have also taught general education classes to adult students. I am a veteran of the United States Army. I graduated from Webster University with a bachelor’s degree in Psychology, and I also hold a master’s degree in Education and a Reading Certificate from Fontbonne University.

My passion for teaching and helping others started at an early age. I would play school with my siblings and friends and, of course, I was always the teacher. As an educator, I am committed to creating a fun and safe learning environment for my students. Every student has the potential to succeed and, as a devoted and dedicated teacher, it is my responsibility to help them reach their full potential. I believe that learning should take place both inside and outside the classroom.

I am excited about working with students and families towards their reading and writing goals!
