• Research Club

This is my third year sponsoring this as an after school club. With continued growth, I hope that this club may become an actual class someday.

This club is for high school students that are seriously interested in pursuing a STEM major in college! 9th grade students might find it a little difficult at first, but with a little extra effort, I am certain they could find success and enjoyment as well.

Students elect to explore a scientific interest on their OWN. Even though I am the sponsor with a chemistry / medical background, projects can cover a variety of topics as the student will become the expert, not me! I am here to guide them on the path on how a project needs to be completed.

Students learn how to develop their own idea into an independent research project. This involves:

-Identifying what inspires them in science

-Narrowing their topic down into more specific questions

-Learning to research SCIENTIFIC literature and how to read articles on academic research

-Refining their question into a "bite-sized" topic

    -Making a research plan

-Finding an expert in their field to guide them (here's a hint, it's probably not ME as a former pediatrician only knows a bit about science!)

-Design and execute their own research project

    -Present their work!

That's a lot to do! Students that stick with the process for the entire year are grateful they have. This is fantastic preparation for joining any type of lab in a university or professional setting.

I am sponsored by Science Coach, please click here to read about their program!

We typically meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays, but students will only advance their projects if they put in work on their own time.
