    Mrs. Smith – Library / Summer Reading Lists 

    Fluency:
    • Read aloud with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression. 
       
    • Read meaningful phrases using intonation and punctuation cues. 
       
    • Monitor your own comprehension and re-read when needed. 
       
    Comprehension:
    • Understand and explain the main idea and supporting details in a text.
    • Summarize what you have read.
    • Make inferences and predictions based on the text.
    • Identify the author's purpose and point of view.
    • Describe characters, setting, plot, and themes.
    • Use context clues to understand unfamiliar words.
    • Connect the text to their own experiences and the world around them.
    • Distinguish between different genres of fiction and understand text features in non-fiction. 
       
    Other Important Goals:
    • Read a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama. 
       
    • Use a range of reading strategies to make meaning from the text. 
       
    • Engage in discussions about the text, offering opinions and supporting them with evidence from the text. 
       
    • Begin to use resources like dictionaries and thesauruses to support their reading. 
       
    Shifting from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn:
    • Third grade is a pivotal year when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn. 
       
    • They are expected to read more complex texts, including chapter books and informational texts. 
       
    • They should be able to apply their reading skills to learn new information and concepts.
