3rd Grade Reading Expectations
Fluency:- Read aloud with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression.
- Read meaningful phrases using intonation and punctuation cues.
- Monitor your own comprehension and re-read when needed.
Comprehension:- Understand and explain the main idea and supporting details in a text.
- Summarize what you have read.
- Make inferences and predictions based on the text.
- Identify the author's purpose and point of view.
- Describe characters, setting, plot, and themes.
- Use context clues to understand unfamiliar words.
- Connect the text to their own experiences and the world around them.
- Distinguish between different genres of fiction and understand text features in non-fiction.
Other Important Goals:- Read a variety of genres, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, and drama.
- Use a range of reading strategies to make meaning from the text.
- Engage in discussions about the text, offering opinions and supporting them with evidence from the text.
- Begin to use resources like dictionaries and thesauruses to support their reading.
Shifting from Learning to Read to Reading to Learn:- Third grade is a pivotal year when students transition from learning to read to reading to learn.
- They are expected to read more complex texts, including chapter books and informational texts.
- They should be able to apply their reading skills to learn new information and concepts.
