Third Grade Writing
Content & Organization:
- Narrative Writing: Introduce the topic, develop characters and a clear sequence of events, and provide a sense of closure.
- Opinion Writing: Introduce the topic, state an opinion, provide reasons to support the opinion, and use linking words to connect reasons.
- Informative Writing: Organize information, convey ideas clearly, and provide a concluding statement.
- Descriptive Language: Use descriptive details, dialogue, and temporal words to develop real or imagined experiences.
- Paragraphs: Move beyond single-sentence writing and begin to organize ideas into paragraphs.
- Topic Sentences: Introduce the main idea of a paragraph.
- Introductions and Conclusions: Begin to write clear introductions and conclusions for their pieces.
Grammar & Mechanics:- Sentences: Write in complete sentences.
- Punctuation: Use commas, periods, quotation marks (for dialogue), and apostrophes (for possessives) correctly.
- Capitalization: Use correct capitalization for the beginning of sentences, names, places, and titles.
- Spelling: Spell words correctly, including those with specific patterns (like doubling consonants or changing y to ies).
- Alphabetical Order: Arrange words in alphabetical order to the third letter.
- Cursive: Learn to write in cursive.
Other Important Goals:- Vocabulary: Expand vocabulary and use new words to make writing clearer and more concise.
- Reference Materials: Use dictionaries and other resources to check and correct spelling.
- Revision and Editing: Revise and edit their own work during and after composing.
- Different Forms: Write in a variety of forms, including stories, poems, and reports.
