Course Description:

Methods of Instruction:
We will use a variety of methods to encourage critical thinking. Some of the methods include:

Course Requirements:
In the Mathematics course for Grade 8, students are expected to actively participate in class discussions and collaborative activities, complete assigned homework promptly, excel in quizzes and tests, engage in projects that apply mathematical concepts practically, contribute to in-class exercises, and diligently review class materials. Regular attendance, respectful behavior, and responsible use of resources are essential, along with a commitment to continuous improvement and seeking assistance when needed. Through these requirements, students will cultivate a comprehensive understanding of mathematical principles and develop effective problem-solving skills.

Unit 4: Transformations and Congruence
- Geometric transformations: translations, rotations, reflections

Assignments:
Hand in all the work on time!!! Class work is due at the end of the period and homework (if given) is due at the beginning of the period. Late work will be accepted up to one week (1) late for a reduced grade (20% deduction). After one week, no late work assignments will be accepted. IT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE STUDENT TO MAKE SURE THEY GET ANY MAKE-UP WORK IF THEY ARE ABSENT.
Homework Policy:
Homework will not be assigned as general practice. Homework may be assigned for additional practice if needed.
Exams/Tests/ Quizzes:
Proficiency assessments will be administered several times a week to check for understanding. The schedule will go as follows:
- Every FRIDAY, learning objectives for week's assessment (Graded to Tyler SIS)
- Weekly Proficiency Freckle score: Adaptive practice (Grade to Tyler SIS on Fridays)
- Weekly Exit Tickets (Graded for Learning Data)
- Various other assessments (Graded for Learning Data)
Make-up Assignments/Quizzes:
Students are responsible for any notes, class assignments and tests missed due to an absence or being tardy. All class assignments and presentations of notes will be uploaded each day (and will follow general assignment rules).
For scheduled absences for school functions/sports, students are expected to notify the instructor PRIOR to the absence.
Revisions:
Assignments that are turned in by due date are eligible for unlimited revisions until the end of the quarter assigned.
Tests/Quizzes are eligible for revision up to one (1) week after being administered.
Grading Practices: Approximately three quarters of your grade will be based on Proficiency (Tests, Quizzes, Class work and Textbook assignments). The remaining part of your grade will be based on participation (bell ringers’ completion, exit ticket completion, group work, projects, etc.). Behavior will not be graded but will be assessed for learning data.
Grades will be calculated on a straight point basis. Projects will be based on a scale of 1 to 100 points depending on the assignment or project.

Sitting Chart:
- This class has a sitting chart
- Every student has to respect this sitting chart.
The teacher may change it whenever she needs for the success of the learning environment.
Attendance Policy:
All students are expected to be on time for class with a proper IPad and ready to start at the beginning of the lesson. In the event of an absence, it is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher to receive all missed assignments and to schedule make-up assessments.
Tardiness:
Unexcused tardiness is not tolerated. You are tardy if you are not in the classroom when the lesson has begun. If you are detained by another school staff person, you must bring a written excuse from that person.
Restroom:
Students will be given a 10-minute window during period 4 to access restrooms. All other restroom needs should be conducted during transition and lunch periods.
Classroom Expectation:
- Arrive prepared and on time
- Be responsible and accountable
- Be respectful to yourself and others
- Keep desk clean and neat (NO writing on desks)
- Ask for permission to leave your assigned seat. NO WALKING AROUND WITHOUT PERMISSION
- Keep food, drinks, and chewing gum outside of the classroom
- Keep your hands, feet, and objects to yourself
- Follow the instructions the first time they are given.
- No CELL PHONE/ ELECTRONICS (including headphones) are allowed to be used in class.
- Follow ALL SAFETY instructions.
My classroom will also observe all rules and regulations set forth by the Compton Drew ILC Middle school student handbook (dress code, tardy policy, behavior expectations, etc.)

Written Assignments and Academic Misconduct: All written work submitted must be the student’s original work and conform to the guidelines provided by the teacher. This means that any substantive ideas, phrases, sentences, and/or any published ideas must be properly referenced to avoid even the appearance of plagiarism. It is the student’s responsibility to know all relevant school policies concerning plagiarism. Any documented cases of plagiarism can and will result in a failing grade.
