Dear Parents and Staff,

My name is Mrs. Melanie Rice-Merritt your new Parent and Community Specialist at Hickey Elementary School.  I have been employed with St. Louis Public Schools for 16 years, as a substitute teacher where I have helped to enhance the lives of many students.  I have worked with students at Ford, Turner, Beaumont, Nance, Sigel, Monroe, Ames, Gateway High, Carr Lane and Shaw.  I am very excited about the 2016-2017 school year at Hickey.  

My mission as a Family Community Specialist is to actively engage parents and the community to develop effective relationships and partnerships, ultimately ensuring student achievement and school improvement.  My focus for the 2016-2017 school year will be to establish a PTO, conduct parent assembly meetings recruit parents to volunteer, assist educators with parents as volunteers in classrooms, create monthly newsletters, provide programs and information to help promote learning at home and survival skills for families.  Through these resources we will establish effective communications between the school and the home.

Together we can change many of the issues that our school is facing.  Join us at Hickey Elementary to truly make this year excellent for our students and families.
