Black History month 2015

     Greetings all you Phoenixes out there. The month of February is set aside for the celebration and recognition of the history, achievements and contributions of African Americans in the United States. The celebration was founded by Dr. Carter J. Woodson in 1950 and officially became Black history month in 1976.  Annually the Library provides a Black History Fact daily during morning announcements. 

     Our Library is filled with Black Authors, books about Inventor, Scientist, Politicians, Artist, Entertainers and much much more. We also have DVDs, E-books, and VHS titles pertaining to Black History. This would be a great time to broaden your Black History knowledge, so come check them out. The Clyde C. Miller, (CCM) Library also sponsors a Black History Poetry contest and a prize is awarded to the first student to tell me what the phrase, Black history, 365, 12, 52 means.

     In honor of Black History our own Ms. J. Samuel will sponsor a Black History program for Students and Faculty and a host of other activities during the Month.

What’s New In Your CCM Library

     The Library is sponsoring a new after school reading program for athletes. They will have the choice of book club or 30 minutes of reading of their choice. There will also be introduction to dictionary skills and vocabulary. The purpose of this program is to promote literacy, enhance reading skills and improve vocabulary which can positively impact test scores.  The program will meet Monday thru Thursday, from 2:15 pm until 3 pm. Start date to be announced.

     Ms. Dietz from the St. Louis Public Library will be hosting book talks in the Library February 1^st and  4^th. She’s promoting a new award winning Black Author, Mr. Jason Reynolds. The St. Louis Public Library is featuring his latest novel, When I Was The Greatest. Free copies are available at any SLPS while supplies last.  You can meet author Jason Reynolds March 2, 2016 for a book talk and book signing at Central Library at 8 pm.   Invited classes will be notified.

     Table games and books on tape are available during all lunches for student use.

     St. Louis Public Library offers several downloadable and digital materials to enhance the electronic library experience. With a valid library card, patrons have the option to download eBooks, eAudiobooks, movies, television episodes, eMagazines and even free music. Hoopla, Overdrive, and Zinio are just a few of the free sites that you can download. Over 200 movies, magazines and music, all free. The number of items they offer increases daily – check often for new titles.

     Did you know that you can get help with homework, get free books, and pay off library fines, all at your St. Louis Public Library? Well you can. You can also volunteer and if you are in the A+ program, you can complete your 50 hours of community service that are required to qualify for two free years of college. This can be done at any Public Library. Library card and volunteer applications can be found at your CCM Library. Visit them soon. Their web address is slpl.com.

What to Wear

     What TO wear and what NOT to wear seems to be the question that is asked more often than not; when trying to get ready to go out and about.  When it comes to going out and about after 6pm, here is what TO wear:  Etiquette states that

      A dress code is a set of rules governing a certain combination +of clothing; some examples are black tie. Formal dress is the grouping of all the dress codes which govern clothes worn to formal events. The traditional rules that govern men's formal dress are strictly observed; from these derive the evening dress variants worn on many occasions, such as high school prom dances, formal dances, and entertainment industry award programs.

      Black tie is a dress code of semi-formal wear for evening events and social functions; worn only after 6 p.m.

Gentlemen's standard

For men, the elements of black tie are:

• A white dress shirt
• A black bow tie
• An evening waistcoat or cummerbund
• A Dinner suit, of black or midnight blue wool, in which the jacket lapels and trouser braid are of silk or other contrasting material
• Black dress shoes.

Formal Dresses: Floor length gowns.  Appropriate for proms, balls, etc. If the affair you are attending is formal, the appropriate dress is a full length gown to the floor.

Today women's dress for black tie occasions is:

• Evening shoes
• A cocktail (knee) length dress.

Black tie is worn to private and public dinners, balls, and parties. The black tie code is sometimes classified as "semi-formal".  Black tie is traditionally worn only after six o'clock in the evening, or after sundown during winter months.

A cocktail dress or cocktail gown is a woman's dress worn at cocktail parties and semi-formal or "black tie" occasions.

The modern definition of a cocktail dress is commonly taken to mean a shorter dress around knee length. It must be smart, such as the little black dress, and may have sequins or lace as a feature.

At semi-formal occasions, a shorter-length cocktail dress may be worn.

Look How Far We Have Come

Negroes and coloreds once were our names

the masters taught us that we had small brains and we were dumb

Look how far we have come

Learning to read was a forbidden deal

if the master found out with his gun he would kill

Now we are uneducated and

labeled to be dumb

Look how far we have come

Now we can have an education but not with the whites

Brown vs. Board of Education fighting for our rights

This case was won

 Look how far we have come

From the dumb to the smart from the weak to the brave

From a white master to a black leader

We are no longer slaves

From Malcolm X and Martin Luther King

Peace on our nation and I Have a Dream

Listening to the pain my people scream

From the cross where Christ was hung

It Out

     Hello, my name is Victoria Knighton and I am a sophomore at Clyde C. Miller with a passion for reading.  Yes that may sound boring and it is unless you find the right book.  That is were Clyde C’s resourceful Library comes in, where you will find many books to fit your interest.  Although there are many great books that I have read, here are three that I “know” you will enjoy. 

1.        The first book is entitled “AshFall”, written by, ILSA  J. BICK.  Ashfall is about a young boy named Alex who goes on a journey to find his family in Warren Illinois where they had gone to visit his uncle and his family.  Leaving Alex alone at home for the weekend.  Alex had been planning on what disobedient things he could do while his family was gone, only to feel his house rumble and shake a little under him.  Thinking it was an earth quake.  Then the power went out, and the house caught fire.  Alex eventually got to the safety of his neighbors home, when he discovered the real reason his home had been destroyed. It was because of a Super Volcanic eruption.  This eruption brought constant darkness, ashes and violence to Alex's world as he strived to find his parents in a world gone black and hopeless.

2.        The next books are a series called DIVERGENT written by Veronica Roth.  Divergent is about a girl named Beatrice who at sixteen has to make a decision that will change her life forever.  Beatrice lives in the future in a city that is divided into five systems, Abenegation, Erudite, Amity, Candor, and Dauntles. These five systems make up the Faction System. In this new society when young Beatrice turned sixteen, she and every young girl at sixteen, must attend a ceremony that chooses every thing that happens for the rest of their lives. You must read it to see if Beatrice allows this society to decide her future or does she rebel.

3.        The third series of books, written by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast (Mother and Daughter), are THE HOUSE OF NIGHT NOVELSs. There are ten books in all. This is my favorite of all.  This first book in the series starts out as Zoey Redbird goes to school on a normal day and is marked with a brilliant Sapphire crescent, which marks her as a vampire fledgling. Then Zoey is taken from her old life and put in the House of Night.  She there finds dark things happening and discovers that their Goddess Nyx has given her a gift that no one else in the world, Fledgling, vampire, or human has ever had, an affinity for the five elements, fire, water, earth, air, and spirit.  Zoey also is the first Vampire fledgling to have a filled in and exponded mark. Zoey uses her uniqueness, power, Cherokee ancestry, and friends to start to fulfill her goddess’s path for her as well as the fight within herself. It’s a great series.

      There are so many great books in our Library. Do yourself a favor visit your CCM Library.
