Why Ducks?
The duck has become the unofficial mascot of the computer science lab. The ducks come from the concept of "rubberduck debugging," a problem-solving technique in coding. More importantly our rubberducks, serve to keep the classroom fun, light-hearted, and community-focused.

About Mr. Schenk
Mr. Alex Schenk enters his tenth year as a lead STEM teacher at Collegiate School of Medicine and Bioscience. Mr. Schenk has grown the computer science program into a multi-year sequence, including two AP courses that offer the opportunity for students to earn college credit in computer science.
In addition to his role as a STEM teacher, Mr. Schenk serves as the Boys Cross Country Head Coach and sponsor of the half-marathon training group "Students on the Go!" In February 2018, Mr. Schenk's coding students competed in the STEM Student Forum Hack-a-thon sponsored by World Wide Technology. Their web application, addressing educational equity in St. Louis, won 1st place from among 20 of the region's top schools, and brought home a $10,000 prize. The student hack-a-thon representing Collegiate won the top prize of $10,000 a second time in March 2021, designing a program to build community in a virtual environment.
Mr. Schenk served on the College Board's Instructional Design Team as a content expert, authoring strategies for the AP Computer Science Principles course framework that were published by the College Board for AP teachers across the country. In Fall 2019, Mr. Schenk was invited to attend the AP Computer Science Summit hosted at Facebook Headquarters in Menlo Park, California. The College Board and Washington Post have both covered student outcomes with AP Computer Science Principles at Collegiate. Alex co-authored the text, 'Fast Track to a 5 AP® Test Preparation Workbook for Computer Science' published by Cengage Learning.
With the College Board, Mr. Schenk is an endorsed AP Workshop Presenter for AP Computer Science Principles, and has facilitated workshops for training teachers across the country, presenting for institutions including the Colorado Education Initiative, Compton Unified School District, Fordham University, University of Arkansas, Augsburg University, and Texas Christian University (TCU).
In his free time, Mr. Schenk enjoys being active, and loves to run, bike, and travel. Mr. Schenk received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Secondary Education and Mathematics from Saint Louis University and his Master of Arts in Educational Technology from Lindenwood University.
