    Reading / Writing

    By the end of the year, students in 3rd grade will be able to…

     Read many types of stories and describe what happened, how the characters were affected and what lessons they learned.

     Answer questions about reading material that covers history, social studies and science; also use information in illustrations, maps and charts to help answer questions.

     Give a class presentation on a topic using facts, details and specific vocabulary.

     Participate in discussions by speaking clearly, listening, sharing opinions, building on other people’s ideas and asking questions.

     Use dialogue and description to write about what a character is thinking and feeling.

     Gather information from online sources in addition to books and articles; use that information to write research papers.

     Use strategies to help decode unknown words and understand the meanings of those words.

     Provide evidence to support main ideas/central message.

     Write a variety of writing types including Narrative, Opinion, and Informational/Expository.

     Provide evidence from multiple sources to support your claims in your writing.

    Math

    By the end of the year students in 3rd grade will be able to…

     Use place value understanding and properties of operations to perform multi-digit arithmetic.

     Develop understanding of fractions as numbers.

     Represent and solve problems involving multiplication and division.

     Understand properties of multiplication and the relationship between multiplication and division.

     Multiply and divide within 100.

     Use the four operations to solve word problems.

     Identify and explain arithmetic patterns.

     Reason with shapes and their attributes.

     Solve problems involving the measurement of time, liquid volumes and weights of objects.

     Understand concepts of area.

     Understand concepts of perimeter.

     Represent and analyze data.

    Science

    By the end of the year, students in Third grade will be able to…

    • Predict and investigate how water can change states: solid, liquid, and gas
    • Make predictions about how heating and cooling can change an object
    • Explain how some objects when magnetized or conduct electricity do not need to touch to interact and design an experiment to demonstrate those

    actions

    • Develop models to show different life cycles of plants and animals
    • List the characteristics of animals and plants and explain how some are inherited and others are not
    • Describe how certain animals have characteristics that help protect them from environmental issues or predators
    • Use evidence to explain how different animals can thrive in certain ecosystems and some struggle based off their characteristics
    • Explain possible solutions about how certain species of plants and animals must adapt to changing environments
    • Construct and analyze charts/graphs to show weather patterns in different seasons
    • Describe different world climates
    • Explain how humans are able to protect themselves in different types of severe weather
    • Describe how certain weather shelters can be improved
    • Design a solution for a problem, understand the criteria, and explain the constraints
    • Compare different solutions for a problem by examining the criteria and constraints
    • Test different solutions to determine which best solves the problem given the criteria and constraints

    Social Studies

    By the end of the year students in Third grade will be able to… preserve democratic ideals, to become a contributing member of society, to understand current events, and to acquire skills needed to investigate, interpret, and apply information.
