Fifth Grade Expectations and Procedures for Switching Classes
Our job as fifth grade teachers is not only equipping students with as much academic knowledge as possible but to get the students ready for middle school as well. We have set up the following expectations and procedures that we feel will help us accomplish these goals.
This year, students in fifth grade will be switching classes for various subjects. Your child will have three different teachers. Mr. Casper will be teaching Math, Ms. Lato will be teaching Science/Social Studies and Mrs. Wilder will be teaching ELA (Reading, Writing, Spelling and Language). The students will spend approximately 70 minutes in each class.
1. Students will start the day with their homeroom teacher. During this class planners will be checked for signatures and notes for the teachers. If a student does not have the planner or it is not signed, they will lose recess. If this occurs two or three days in a row, parents will be notified. Planners are a wonderful way for us to communicate every day.
2. Students will line up and travel to each class in a quiet and orderly fashion.
3. Students will use their backpacks to travel to each class. They will bring all the materials needed for each class. This includes pencils, iPad, notebooks, spirals, homework, books etc. Not being prepared will result in the consequence of no recess and will be documented in the planner for your information. Students may not go back to their previous class to get forgotten materials. This will cause a disruption to that class. Please remember that ipads need to be fully charged each morning. We do not have time for students to charge their ipads during class time. If their iPad dies during the day, they may miss important assignments. Fully charged ipads will last the entire school day.
4. Each teacher will explain his/her classroom expectations to each group of students. The students are expected to follow the rules/expectations/procedures of each individual teacher (they only have three this year, it could be up to seven next year).
5. Students are expected to turn in assignments on time to each teacher.
6. Unless the class is going to the restroom as a group, students will not be allowed to use the restroom unless it is an emergency. Frequent emergencies may be an indication of a medical issue and the student may need to use the restroom in the nurses’ office. Depending on the frequency, the nurse may contact you.
7. Completed work from all three classes will be sent home on Friday in the student’s Friday folder. Please remember to sign the back and return it on Monday. The weekly newsletter with valuable information, spelling words and homework assignments for the following week will also be in the folder.
8. If you have a concern, question etc. about a specific subject or class, please contact the teacher that teaches that specific subject.
9. Phones are expected to stay in your child’s bookbag. It is to be powered off and not taken out during the school day. If we see a phone out during class time or a student is getting in their backpack for no reason and we suspect they are using their phone, we will take the phone until the end of the day. If it continues, they will be required to give it to their homeroom teacher upon arrival each day so it can be locked up and then returned at the end of the day. Consistent misuse of the school/district cell phone policy could result in your child not being allowed to bring it to school.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns. The following is a way to reach each of your child’s teachers:
We look forward to a wonderful year with you and your child as we help guide them to the next step in their educational adventure.
Respectfully,
Fifth Grade Teachers
