Mr. Jawanza Avant

I serve as the Family Support Specialist and After-School Director at Vashon High School, where I am committed to fostering strong partnerships between students, families, and the school community. I am dedicated to developing programs that support student success, build leadership skills, and promote academic and personal growth beyond the classroom.

Prior to joining Vashon High School, I taught 6th and 7th Grade Social Studies and 6th Grade English at Carr Lane Visual and Performing Arts Middle School, where I also coached co-ed cross-country and girls’ track. I have also taught 5th grade and served as an RTI (Response to Intervention) teacher and girls’ track coach at Whiteside Middle School. Additionally, I coached girls’ volleyball and girls’ track at McKinley Classical Leadership High School, guiding student-athletes to achieve excellence through discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.

I am a proud member of Phi Sigma Pi Fraternity, an organization dedicated to scholarship, leadership, and fellowship—values that closely align with my approach to education and community engagement.

Outside my professional work, I am passionate about travel and cultural exploration. I enjoy experiencing new perspectives and bringing those insights back to enhance my work with students and families. My lifelong goal is to continue growing as an educational leader and make a meaningful, lasting impact on the students, families, and communities I serve.
