- Literacy in the Lou is BACK for the 25-26 school year! We are excited to launch the Books Choose You Reading Challenge. This district wide initiative runs from Sept. 8-21. It is to all SLPS students PreK -12. This year the district has created an electronic Books Choose You Reading Tracker that students will create directly. Students you have to read at least 30 minutes daily and put this information into the electronic tracker at www.SLPS.org/LitTheLou or Books Choose You Reading Challenge. All students who complete the challenge will be invited to a recognition ceremony on Sat. Sept. 27th and be eligible for prizes. This information has been uploaded to all Grade Level TEAMS folders.

How reading a book a day, keeps pandemic stress away
After more than a year of virtual school and pandemic stress bearing down on them, reading has become a much-needed escape for families like the Elys. “Reading stories, especially fantasy, is a ‘social vaccination’ against all the restrictions because they help children find a way to exit what COVID-19 put into play,” says Prisco Piscitelli, UNESCO Chair on Health Education and Sustainable Development, who co-authored a 2020 study on the link between reading children’s literature and wellbeing. And after a recent study by Stanford University found that reading fluency is lagging by about 30 percent during the pandemic, especially for second- and third-graders, getting kids back to books is more important than ever.

Dr. Daisy Fisher
Hello Everyone,
I am so excited to learn and collaborate with you! This year, we will explore many different reading intervention skills and strategies to increase the number of proficient readers at our school. I hope you are ready for an amazing learning experience both in person and/or online. Throughout my experience as an educator, there has been no greater joy than to see students learn to read. My intention is to help both staff and students increase their knowledge and become even more motivated to improve student reading performance.
It is an honor and privilege to positively impact the lives of students and families at Soldan International Studies High School (currently located at Gateway STEM) through literacy. Thank you for this unique opportunity to challenge and inspire students to become avid readers!
With Gratitude,
Dr. Daisy Fisher
