  • The HiSET Mathematics Test has 55 problems that need to be completed in 90 minutes. It is considered a calculator neutral test although there is a drop down calculator if needed. All HiSET sub-tests require students to receive a scaled score of 8 of 20 to pass the test. Since there are 55 problems, a student MUST get 22 problems correct on the test to pass. I strongly encourage students to aim  higher as they need a total score of 45 to pass the test.

    There are 4 categories on the test:

    Numbers and Operations on Numbers (19%)

    Data Analysis/Probability/Statistics (18%)

    Geometry/Measurement (18%)

    Algebraic Concepts (45%)

    Class schedule:

             Monday: Practice test problems with teacher and students taking notes. Individual assignments  

             Tuesday: Practice test problems with teacher and students taking notes. Individual assignments.

             Wednesday: Practice test problems with teacher and students taking notes. Individual assignments.

             Thursday: Practice test problems with teacher and students taking notes. Individual assignments.

             Friday: Individual assignments

     

    Individual assignments are based on each student’s pre-test. The student is responsible for completing the pre-test in a timely manner and working the individual assignments when instructed to do so. Students will grade their own work—they know if it was a “silly” mistake or they truly did not understand the problem and need additional help to figure out how to work the problems. This is the time for any one-on-one help.

    Practice test problems will be worked by the teacher who will explain both how to do the particular problem and test taking strategies. The problems are grouped by the categories on the test and also by the types of problems. Students are expected to take notes on how to solve the problems as well as the test-taking strategies discussed.

    Students may ask to take a post-test at any time they think they are ready. This will be another step before taking the actual HiSET and provide more study opportunities.
