A 2017 NATIONAL BLUE RIBBON SCHOOL
(click here for the full video announcement.)Sept. 28, 2017 - U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today recognized Mallinckrodt Academy of Gifted Instruction, along with 342 other schools in the country, as a National Blue Ribbon School for 2017. This award is based on the school’s overall academic excellence or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. Mallinckrodt AGI has illustrated high-quality instruction and excellence in student learning and achievement.
“National Blue Ribbon Schools are active demonstrations of preparing every child for a bright future,” said DeVos. “They are visionaries, innovators and leaders. They have much to teach us.”
The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program honors public and private elementary, middle, and high schools where students either achieve very high learning standards or are making notable improvements in closing the achievement gap. The award flag gracing a school’s building is a widely recognized symbol of exemplary teaching and learning.
All schools are recognized in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, subgroup student scores and graduation rates:
- Exemplary High Performing Schoolsare among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates are also at the highest levels.
- Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schoolsare among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s subgroups and all students over the past five years. Student subgroup performance and high school graduation rates for each subgroup are at high levels.
“At Mallinckrodt, we have pushed initiatives such as problem/project based learning, accelerated curriculums to meet the needs of our students and aggressively approached STEM as a proponent of who we are through various thoughtful partnerships,” said DeAndre Thomas, principal of Mallinckrodt Academy of Gifted Instruction. “Within our school community, we know firsthand the state-of-the-art educational and personal development our students receive at MAGI; this national recognition only confirms our beliefs and shows our results on a national level.”
Mallinckrodt is one of only eight schools in Missouri to earn the National Blue Ribbon School honor for 2017. The school will be officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at a ceremony in Washington D.C. in early November.
