This will be my 17th year at Wilkinson ECC and I consider it my second home. I have been doing reading interventions for five years now. Previously, I taught preschool to second grade, including preschool and kindergarten inclusion. Besides teaching reading at Wilkinson, I am also excited about participating in our school's Student Success Team. We have been fortunate to work with community and university partners the past several years developing our knowledge and systems regarding trauma-informed care.
My work at Wilkinson is anchored in the belief that all children deserve to learn in a space that embraces them and celebrates their unique strengths and identities. It is important to me to make connections with my students on a personal level, so that when it is time to get to the hard work of learning to read, we are on the same journey together.
I meet with small groups of students to work on the building blocks of reading and writing. Our lessons always include: phonemic awareness warm ups, phonics work, sight word work, reading strategies, and fluency practice. The lessons are fast-paced, active, and tailored to deepen students' confidence in themselves as readers and thinkers. I strive to use materials that respect students' interests, cultures, and academic needs. The reading program is designed to help young students make substantial reading progress in a short amount of time. Students come to reading groups on a needs basis as determined by district and teacher assessments. If you have any questions or concerns, please consider me another resource at Wilkinson!
