    The magnet focus at Dewey is international studies. Beginning in Pre-Kindergarden, students learn greetings, phrases, expressions, and more in Japanese, French, and Spanish. Students also learn the cultural similarities and differences of people who live in countries where the languages are spoken and are taught by teachers who are fluent in the language. In third grade, students choose a language of focus for the remainder of their elementary career.

    The diverse population at Dewey includes children from different countries. Students are encouraged to keep their first language as they learn and become proficient in English. The diversity of our school contributes to a positive learning environment where students of all backgrounds are celebrated.

    Overall test scores on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) at Dewey exceeded the average for the Saint Louis Public Schools. Dewey is a Gold Star School.

    The international studies theme is reflected in classroom instruction whereby each class selects a country to incorporate into the curriculum. The adopted country influences social studies, literature, and mathematics. There is an emphasis on having students present and share their learning with other students and with families during our annual International Festival.

    Dewey International Studies is an elementary magnet school located at the southwestern edge of St. Louis City. The school is within walking distance of Forest Park, the Nature Playscape, the St. Louis Art Museum, the St. Louis Zoo and the St. Louis Science Center. These attractions are visited on field trips.

    Students enrolled in the gifted program engage in collaborative projects, research, analytical thinking, coding, STEM, chess, and maker space. Through these experiences they learn how to solve problems creatively and how to work through challenges with the ultimate goal of becoming an autonomous life-long learner.
