Dear Students and Families
Hello! My name is Ms. Scherer. This is my first year at the Bryan Hill Elementary but I have been blessed with 5 great years teaching at Yeatman-Liddell Middle school and can't wait to get to know your students.
I love hands on projects and supporting student independence to prepare them for the real world. In order to accomplish that vision here is a brief overview of what you need to know about this class and the expectations that will be placed on your students.
I can’t wait to have a great school year!
Mrs. Scherer
Student Expectations
Be Respectful
Students and Staff, will respect everyone by: speaking kindly, honoring personal boundaries, listening the first time, and practicing care for ourselves and others.
Be Responsible
Students and staff will work together to keep the classroom clean, peaceful and full of learning. This looks like putting away our materials neatly, using trashcans, following appropriate voice levels and following the expectations.
Practice Independence
Students will be responsible for following expectations and completing class work, classroom tasks and personal needs within reason.
Advocate for your Education
Students and Staff will work together to make sure EVERYONE gets what they need in the classroom. This looks like: asking for help, showing kindness for classmates, and using leadership skills in a positive way.
Use Technology Responsibly
Technology is intended to be used for academic purposes. If it is not being used appropriately then a paper/pencil alternative will be provided.
Consequences/Documentation
If students do not meet the classroom expectations the following interventions will be enforced and documented after each infraction.
- Non-verbal/verbal warning
- Seat change or loss of privileges
- Buddy rooms
- Behavioral or Academic student teacher meeting
- Phone call home
All infractions will have a entry in the written discipline log.
All Student teacher meetings will be written in the discipline log as well as SIS
ALL parent communication will be documented in SIS
Documentation will be used to demonstrate patterns of behavior to showcase improvement or decline over the course of the school year.
Grades and Academic Breakdown
In Class Work- In class assignments are worked on, reviewed, and turned in during the school day. Color Coded labeled bins are accessible for student turn in. Points will be taken daily for participation and behavior. 90% of students grade come from in class assignments and participation.
Take Home Work- In this classroom we encourage a healthy work life balance therefore, take home work will NEVER exceed over 30minutes of work per night. I do not give out homework on weekends. If your child is struggling with the independent tasks, please reach out for assistance so that I can provide resources for your faimly.
Spelling words- Students will be sent home with students each Monday. Students need to practice their words for 5-10 minutes per night. There will be a spelling word test each Friday to check for vocabulary progress.
Reading with adults- Students are encouraged to read with their adults and family's each night for at least 10 minutes. Hearing fluent readers and reading with trusted adults builds strong reading and fluency skills. If you need books, please reach out and I will send some home with the student.
Optional Math/Reading Practice - Upon family request students can be provided with extra Math or Reading practice should they need extra help. I may reach out to family to see if this is a good option, should a student need extra practice outside of the school day. If you would like this as an option for your student please reach out.
Absences- Students who are absent will be provided a packet of makeup work the day of their return. This will go home with them to be completed and will be due one week from their return. This gives them ample time to work through and bring in assignments for help before the due date. Extended absences will be handled on a case by case basis.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about your child’s progress please reach out weekdays between 7am and 5pm
Family Involvement
- Students often do their best in school with the support of their families working alongside their teacher. It takes a village so let's be theirs.
- If you have any questions, concerns or want to get involved please reach out via email at mstorz8844@slps.org
